(Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection, Arc-Fault Circuit-In Interrupter Protection and Type "IC" Rated Recessed Light Fixtures)
All new construction (including additions, alterations, and remodels) shall be provided with the following:

Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for:
  • Bathroom receptacles (125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere)
  • Garage and grade-level portions of unfinished (storage/work area) accessory building receptacles (125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere). See exceptions, Section E3802.2, I.R.C.   
  • Outdoor receptacles (125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere)
  • Kitchen receptacles that serve countertop surfaces (125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere)
  • Unfinished (storage/work area) basement receptacles (125-volt, single–phase, 15- and 20-ampere). See exceptions, Section E3902.5, I.R.C.
  • Receptacles located within 6 feet of the outside edge of a laundry sink, utility or wet bar sink (125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere)
  • Hydromassage bathtub, spa and hot tub locations and for electrically heated floors in bathrooms and kitchens. See sections E3902, E4208, and E4209, I.R.C.

Arc-fault circuit-interrupter protection for:
All branch circuits that supply 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere outlets in family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways and similar rooms or areas shall be protected by a combination type arc-fault circuit interrupter installed to provide protection of the branch circuit.

***Please note: Where branch circuit wiring is modified, replaced, or extended in any of the areas specified above, the branch circuit shall be arc-fault protected in compliance with section E3902.13, I.R.C.

"Type IC Rated" Recessed Light Fixtures:
Check to make sure that all recessed light fixtures used are listed "Type IC rated" (identified and listed for contact with insulation) and are so labeled on the fixture. Only listed "Type IC rated" recessed light fixtures are permitted to be in contact with combustible materials at recessed parts, points of support, and portions passing through the building’s structure and at finish trim parts at the opening in the ceiling or wall. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s labeling, especially the “warning” tags prior to installation and operation of the fixture.

***Please note: Only listed "Type IC rated" recessed light fixtures are allowed by the City.
