Strap and Shear
The residential inspection checklist for strap and shear includes:

  • Exterior wall stud size, spacing and height, Table R602.3(5), with double top plate staggered 24 inches, section R602.3.2, I.R.C., unless required otherwise by structural analysis.
  • Three (3) stud corner, Figure R602.3(2), I.R.C.
  • Treated sole / sill plates and foundation anchorage, section R403.1.6, I.R.C.
  • Second story sill plate nailing per structural analysis and shearwall schedule.
  • Notching or drilling top plates, section R602.6.1 and Figure R602.6.1, I.R.C.
  • Shearwall panel material, thickness, length and orientation per structural details and for structural notes.
  • Shearwall transfer connections to floor / roof diaphragm per structural details.
  • Roof diaphram attachment per structural details and/or structural notes.
  • Shearwall nailing and holdowns per shearwall schedules, including shearwall blocking requirements. ***Please note: All epoxied holdowns and anchors require special inspection by an approved agency.
  • Perforated shearwalls require blocking / straps (top and bottom) per structural details.
  • Shearwall panel damage, notching and/or boring of the panel requires a structural engineer of record stamped re-design fix.  ***Please note:  Excessive penetration of panel fasteners must be addressed by the addition of fasteners and/or by the replacement of the entire panel. Damage may include incorrect panel edge fastening.
  • Multiple 2x studs at holdowns per structural details.
  • Shearwall to floor / roof diaphragm load transfer framing (parallel and perpendicular) per structural detail.
  • Wall to wall load transfer (MST) straps across / connection to floor diaphragm rim per structural details.
  • Column / post mechanical base connection to resist lateral displacement, section R407.3, I.R.C.
  • Protection of exterior or garage column / post base (elevated min. 1 inch above A.F.F.), section R317.1.4, I.R.C.
  • All beams and headers sized per plan, with diagonal strap ties at exterior opening headers per structural detail.
  • Beam/header to wall connection per structural details.
  • Roof framing to wall framing uplift connection per structural details and section R802.11, I.R.C.
  • Roof truss damage, notching and/or boring of the truss requires truss manufacturer engineer's stamped re-design fix.
  • For "portal frame" design requirements, reference section R602.10.6.2 and R602.10.6.3, I.R.C.
  • For alternate braced wall panel "design requirements, reference section R602.10.6.1, I.R.C.
