Dry Wall Nailing
The residential checklist for dry wall nailing includes:

  • Shearwall nailing (size and spacing), including required edge blocking per shearwall schedules.
  • Unless otherwise noted in the engineered shearwall schedule / details, nailing: maximum 7 inches o.c. for ceiling and maximum 8 inches o.c. for walls as specified in Table R702.3.5, I.R.C.
  • For all "braced wall panels": maximum 7 inches o.c. at edge and maximum 7 inches o.c. at field, section R602.10.3, item 5, I.R.C.
  • Gypsum board applied to ceiling framing members at 24 inches o.c. must be sag-resistant and so labeled (“no sag”, “ceiling board”, etc.), footnote d., Table R702.3.5, I.R.C.
  • Enclosed accessible space below stairways: minimum ½ inch gypsum board, City standard.
  • Approved moisture-resistant and mold-resistant gypsum backing board to be used in shower or tub compartments, section R702.3.8, I.R.C.
  • Appproved ½ inch moisture-resistant and mold-resistant gypsum backing board may be used on ceiling where frame spacing does not exceed 12 inches on center, section R702.3.8, I.R.C.
  • Unless properly weather protected, only gypsum "soffit board" can be used for exterior horizontal applications (incl. patio ceilings and entry / porch ceilings), section R702.3.5, I.R.C. and ICC ES reporting.
  • Minimum 5/8 inch type “x” gypsum board required at all garage warm walls and at all garage bearing walls, section R309.2, City ordinance amendment.
  • Minimum 5/8 inch type “x” gypsum board required at garage ceiling and all structural support members, section R309.2, City ordinance amendment.
  • 5/8 inch type "x" gypsum board joints and penetrations are required to be tight, City standard.
  • Minimum 1 inch clearance (unless otherwise listed by type “B” vent manufacturer) required between type “B” vents and any gypsum board product.
***Please note:  Gypsum wall board is a combustible material.
